Rockin’ Your Office Party
Posted Wednesday December 16th, 2015 by Gia Manalio-Bonaventura in Fun + Personal. With the holidays upon us, it’s time again for that annual event that often promises to be at best, awkward. That’s right; it’s time for your office party.
Admit it: You’ve probably attended at least one work party where you spent the entire time talking to the few coworkers you already know about the same work you already discuss every day. Meanwhile, your head was spinning with all of the things you rather be doing like playing Fallout 4, watching Game of Thrones or even reorganizing your sock drawer.
Well, guess what! Your office party really can be a stellar event on both a professional and personal level. Let us give you some tips on how to turn it up (without turning it up too much).
Get involved. Do you consider yourself a great party planner? Do you feel like you have your finger on the pulse of what your coworkers would enjoy? What would you enjoy? Volunteer to help organize the festivities.
Accept the invitation. It’s just proper business etiquette to attend your office party. Plus the party is your boss’s way of celebrating the hard work you’ve put in over the year — it’s well deserved. Bask in it.
Dress for the occasion. Once you find out where the party is, what type of activities you’ll be participating in, and most importantly, what the dress code is, it’s your chance to shed the business causal and show your coworkers how truly marvelous your personal style is — as long as the particular fabulous outfit is within the dress code parameters.
Mingle. Think about how much time you spend at your desk with your head buried in your work. How many opportunities do you have during the workday to get to know any of your coworkers on a more personal level? The work party is the perfect time to get out there and really meet people. Many of us spend more time with our coworkers than we do with our family and friends. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had something other than work to talk to them about? Or how about if you truly felt that you “had each other’s backs”? We’re not saying that you have to become BFFs and start spending weekends together, although if you are anything like us GEMites, you may want to, but making connections with your coworkers is one of the best ways to improve your overall job satisfaction. It’s also great for raising office morale.
Enjoy yourself. This is a party, after all. So go ahead and have a bite to eat (which is likely to be delicious), have some drinks (know your limits and stick to them), and rock that party!
When it comes to the office party, there really are no perks to being a wallflower.
Have a safe, wonderful and jolly holiday season from all of us GEMites!
