Mobile Milestones

Posted Wednesday March 26th, 2014 in Trends + Technology.

You may not know it, but we’re currently sitting between two milestones that have significant influence on the lives we live today. March 13 th  was the 30 th  anniversary of the first commercial cell phone purchase, while the forthcoming 40-year anniversary of the first successful cellular telephone call will be celebrated on April 3 rd .

Back then, the term “cellphone” referred more to the once-promising “car phone” than to the lifelines we can’t live without today.

Motorola-Dyna Originally written-off as nothing more than a gimmick, “the brick” weighed a dainty 28 ounces, down from the 2.5 pound prototype used a decade earlier.

After ten years and nearly $100 million dollars’ worth of research and development, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X hit the market with a $3,995 ($9,460 in 2014 dollars) price tag and minimal sales expectations. Gone are the days of needing a spotter to help lift our phones.  With technology on the forefront of advertising campaigns in 2014, the artist formerly known as “cellular radio telephone” has evolved to become a valued member of the modern advertising plan. The devices of today have evolved to become the perfect geo-targeted way to reach extraordinarily specific demographics at extraordinarily specific places and times.
