How To Write An Effective Blog
Posted Friday September 26th, 2014 by Lauren Downer in Trends + Technology. Many of our clients often come to us saying: What should I blog about? How long should it be? How do I get started? These frequently asked questions made it very apparent that our social media team needed to perform the inevitable – blog about blogging.
The best way to look at blogging is to pretend that you’re writing in a journal. However, this isn’t a personal journal filled with your deepest, darkest secrets – rather, your very own online platform that can be read by anyone and EVERYONE. Please don’t let this alarm you! In fact, embrace the ambiguity to your readers! You are being given the platform to share your expertise, knowledge and most importantly – your opinion.
It’s with this in mind that we are going to provide you with five top tips that are essential to blogging:
- Try to keep your blog between 300-500 words (approximately three minutes reading time). This length is perfect for wandering attention spans, along with being both SEO friendly and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
- Keep your blog to the point. When writing your blog, remember to stay both on target and on point. Nothing is worse than reading a rambling, uninformative blog entry!
- Make sure your blog is SEO friendly. This isn’t as difficult as you might think. Being SEO friendly simply means – remember to use your keywords/phrase and apply them wherever and whenever you can. For example, use the word blog in the title, the excerpt, introduction, main body itself.
- Make your blog accessible for all. Now, this tip could be up for debate. In our opinion, you want your content to be readable (and somewhat relatable) to as many different audiences as possible. Now, there are some instances where this rule does not apply, namely industry-specific blogs (technological, medical and compliance). In these cases, this is the perfect time to hit readers with the technical, informative jargon that they are actively seeking.
- Make your blog attractive to the eye . This isn’t an invitation to fill your blog with copious amounts of images and bold lettering. Just keep it simple, cover your basics and make sure to add all of the following:
- A blog related image (with an alt tag that contains your keyword/ phrase)
- A heading (preferably using a H1/H2 formatting)
- Outbound links to other supporting articles/websites
- Incorporate the subheading into the website url (for example: www.gem-advertising/blog/blogging-blues)
