How to Start Your Business Like a 9-Month-Old Baby
Posted Friday July 15th, 2016 by Peter Kozodoy in Analysis + Strategy.Have you seen this titular phenomenon, where writers tell you how to “Blog Like You’re 7!” and “Perform SEO Like You’re 5!” I don’t know about you, but I’m not 7 or 5 years old — I’m 12 and a half, so frankly, it’s a bit insulting.
But, ageism notwithstanding, here’s how to start your business like a 9-month-old baby:
- No matter how much you might cry about it, you’ll get fed when you need it. Start with a clear, confident mindset.
- Take stock of what you’ve got. If you’ve got rattles, run with that. If you’ve got bouncy chairs, that’s perfect. Everyone’s got resources. If you need to pilfer Cheerios from your high-top, have at it. Know where your assets are — what you have, and what you don’t.
- Get ready to fall on your face. Because when you start standing up, you’re probably going to topple over like the chubby-legged mess that you are. But that’s OK — that’s the only way you’ll learn to successfully run, as long as you stay near that nice plush couch. Take risks but use backup plans.
- Depend on others. Even when you think you’re a hotshot runaway baby, you still need to listen and obey your superiors. Know when to ask for help and seek out learning opportunities.
- Learn to share. Don’t hog the I-can-put-square-blocks-in-square-holes thingy. Let others participate in your daily routine and become part of your story. Find spectacular people and empower them to share your dream.
- Give back. When it’s time to grow out of those clothes and toys, pass them on to the next set of kids or even your sibling (the horror!). Remember who helped you along the way, thank them, and become a role model for the next generation of entrepreneurs.
So, there you have it. I stretched a bit here and there, but you get the picture. Not bad for jumping on the bandwagon, right? And the next time you see a 9-month-old baby, make sure you say thanks for the entrepreneurial lessons.
