Clever Creative: A Reflection of the Future?

Happy New Year! With the entire 2018 ahead of us, we can only imagine the possibilities that are yet to come: personal, professional, societal and technological. However, if you’re obsessed with the Netflix original “Black Mirror” as some of us at GEM are, you already have a glimpse into our high tech-future. [Cue the dramatic music.] But have you thought about how close we are to that future? If you haven’t, or even if you have, we think this New Year’s advertisement from “Black Mirror,” created by agency B-Reel is a real eye-opener.

Are we being paranoid? Watch the ad and see for yourself (and don’t worry, there are no spoilers):

From the beginning, “Black Mirror” has been promoted as a warning of what can happen as technology progresses and the opportunities to use it in negative ways increase. Identifying that theme in the ad is in itself no surprise. However to see scenes from the show alongside actual scenes from our own reality is jarring … and clever.

Will this fast-paced, scene-shifting creative be the conversation-starter the creators of “Black Mirror” hope it to be? We think that’s quite possible; there has been much talk about it around the office. But at the very least, we are sure the ad will raise interest in watching the series, quite possibly in one big binge.

Don’t let it get you too down, though. The series may be dark, but it is as well-executed and engaging as its corresponding ad. But if you are looking for a more optimistic view of our reality, visit our blog: “Clever Creative: Authentically Singing the Praises of Humanity.”

What do you think about “Black Mirror” and its New Year campaign?
