8 Things That Go Through an Intern's Mind on the First Day of Work
As a college student, it is imperative to obtain an internship before graduating. Most schools require students to have at least two before they are Seniors, in order to be “prepared” to enter the real world. However, no matter how many internships a person has, there are always eight things that go through their minds on their first day of work.
- Are they going to like me?
You were able to win them over with your charming personality in the interview, but now they have to spend hours with you, day-after-day, and maybe they’ll begin to hate you. My advice? Be yourself. That may sound cliche, but if you act like your normal self, people will like you no matter what. If they don’t… then maybe it’s not the right place for you. - What if I’m not the most amazing intern ever?
We all go into internships thinking we have to be the best, but the truth is… you don’t. Employers understand that this is a learning experience and you might mess up every once in a while. Don’t give up! Keep improving yourself and your work! - What should I wear?
Depending on the company, the attire for work can be business, business casual, or casual. The best thing to do is email someone from the company, that you’ve been in contact with, and simply ask. If all else fails, dress in formal attire; this way you still look professional and show that you are taking the position seriously. Plus… you can always adjust your wardrobe after the first day. - What if I’m late on my first day?
Don’t be! Make sure you prepare everything you need the night before. Pack your lunch, plan your outfit, and prepare all other materials you’ll need for the next day. When setting your alarm, make sure you plan for enough time to get ready with some wiggle-room… just in case. - The office and workers are super intimidating!
Unfortunately, not every office is like Dunder Mifflin Paper Company’s. Most offices seem scary when you don’t know anyone, but odds are everyone is really nice. Don’t let your nerves get the best of you! - What if all I do is get them coffee?
There’s a chance you might have to get coffee, but it’s not the only thing they’d make you do. Being an intern isn’t always a glamorous job, but each task you’re given can be an excellent learning experience. - I have no clue how to do the task they just gave me.
Most often, that will be the case. Again, this is an opportunity to learn so if you don’t know how to do something… ask! Your fellow employees will be more than happy to help you. - What if I blow this opportunity?
Unless you purposely do everything bad on your first day, chances are you won’t get fired. Employers are patient with interns because they truly want them to learn and gain skills that they will use for the rest of their lives.
